  1. “Ghosts could never affright her.”

    I think this is another charming example of antiquated usage. If you look at the Google ngrams (https://goo.gl/Ko2XOv), you will see that in 1700 “affright” was more popular that “frigthen”. By 1800, the two words were equally popular. But currently, “frighten” has almost totally replaced “affright”.

    Language is such a slave of fashion!
