你见过老虎和狐狸吗?你觉得他们谁更可怕?

有一天,一只老虎非常饿。突然,它发现了一只狐狸。老虎抓住狐狸,想吃了它。狐狸想出一个办法,它对老虎说:“你不能吃我,因为我是森林之王,动物们都怕我。”老虎不相信狐狸的话。狐狸又说:“我们一起在森林里走一走,看看动物们怕不怕我。”

于是,狐狸在前面走,老虎在后面走。森林里的兔子、羊看到它们,都马上跑了。

愚蠢的老虎相信了狐狸的话,它不知道动物们怕的是自己。

怕不怕
be afraid of…or not

“A不A” (A is a verb or an adjective) is often used to enquire or seek opinions.
我们一起在森林里走一走,看看动物们怕不怕我。
We should take a walk in the forest to see whether the animals are afraid of me.

Example:
(1)你们喜欢不喜欢“狐假虎威”的故事?
(2)老师,考试题难不难?

怕的
something feared by others

“v.+的” is a nominal structure.
它不知道动物们怕的是自己。
It didn’t realize that it was itself that the animals were afraid of.

Example:
(1)今天中午我一个人在家,没有吃的,也没有喝的。
(2)星期五我们去书店了,他买的是汉语书,我买的是日语书。

    Have you seen a tiger and a fox ? Which one of them
    do you think is more feared?

    有一天,一只老虎非常饿。突然,它发现了一只狐狸。
    老虎抓住狐狸,想吃了它。狐狸想出一个办法,它对老虎说:
    “你不能吃我,因为我是森林之王,动物们都怕我。”老虎不相信
    狐狸的话。狐狸又说:“我们一起在森林里走一走,看看动物们
    怕不怕我.”

    One day, there was a very hungry tiger . Suddenly, it found a fox.
    The tiger seized the fox and he thought of eating the fox. But the
    fox thought of a way and said to the tiger: “You can not eat me,
    because I am King of the forest, and the animals are all afraid of me.
    The tiger would not believe what the fox said: The fox said again
    ” We walk in the forest together and see if all the animals are afraid of
    me”.

    于是,狐狸在前面走,老虎在后面走。森林里的兔子、羊看到它们,
    都马上跑了。

    So, the fox walked in front and the tiger walked behind. When all the
    rabbits in the forest saw them coming, they all immediately ran away.

    愚蠢的老虎相信了狐狸的话,它不知道动物们怕的是自己。

    The stupid tiger then believed all that the fox said. But it did not
    know that all the animals were afraid of themselves.

    But the animals where not afright of them selves 自己, but of the tiger walking behind the fox! 自己 revers to the tiger!

    Did you ever see a tiger and a fox?
    Do you who of them is the most afraid?
    One day, a tiger was very hungry. Suddenly, he saw a fox.
    The Tiger coughed the fox and wanted to eat it.
    The fox thought of a plan: he said to the tiger:
    “You cannot eat me, because I am the king of the forest, all animals are
    affright of me”. De tiger did not believe the words of the fox. The fox
    said again, “Let us walk together in the forest, so you can see wether or
    not the animals are affright of me”
    And so the went, the fox in front and the tiger behind him. All the rabbits
    and the sheep in the forest fled immediately. The stupid Tiger believed
    the words of the fox, he did not realizing that it was he the animals most feared.
