        1. Hi Julio,
There is no fixed rule to create Chinese phrases or words.
What I think is you have to read more in order to use the appropriate Chinese words or phrases.

    1. Hi Julio,
Yes. For some of the Chinese words/phrases, you should not look at the meanings of each character, e.g. 早上 (morning), 晚上 (night).
      早 – morning
      上 – on, above

However, for some of the Chinese words, you can guess the meaning by looking at each character, e.g. 直升机 (helicopter).
      直 – straight
      升 – go up
      机 – machine

  1. Hi Min Min,
Please help me understand this sentence, 您的餐齐了. 您的餐 means your food. I would like to learn the usage of 齐.
Here is another chinese sentence, 客人 都 来齐了。Is there any change in meaning if I rewrite the previous sentence as 客人 都 来了 without 齐. Thanks, MinMin.
We all should take this great opportunity, you have given for us by creating this wonderful web site to learn Chinese.

    1. Hi Larry,
齐 in your sentences is an adverb which means “all ready; all present”.

您的餐齐了 – Your food is (all) ready.
客人都来齐了 – All the guests have arrived.
      人都到齐了 – Everyone is present.

“齐” will make a slightly different in meaning of a sentence.
You can say 客人都来了 or 所有的客人都来了 to mean “All the guests have arrived.”
      By adding “齐”:
客人都来齐了 or 所有的客人都来齐了 to mean “All the guests have arrived. (completely)”

齐 is used as an adverb to make the sentence has the sense/feel of “complete”.

  2. Hi Min Min,
Thanks for your explanation. 齐is very interesting word for me. Apparently, 齐changs the meaning of sentence a bit.人都到了 means everyone has arrived. But, 人都到齐了means everyone is present(not only everyone arrive, also everyone is here, I guess).
For 客人都来齐了, all guests not only have come also arrived.(to help memorize 齐 for myself).
    Thanks, Min Min.
    谢谢 你的帮助
    Larry
